Manufacturer: William Marples

Tool Type: Drawknife

Drawknife Type: Small

The black handled William Marples drawknife is called the 'Carpenters American Pattern - Razor Edge drawknife - 1164'.

The drawknife is fitted with hardwood handles which are finished in a black finish.

On top of the black finish on the front face there is the Wm Marples logo on each handle. This logo consists of the wording 'Marples, Sheffield England' and the shamrock symbol all set in front of a white oval background.

It is common for these drawknives to have lost some black paint including the logos.

The handles are finished with steel ferrules where the tangs enter the handles and steel caps on top of the handles.

The cast iron blade is slightly convex and in this instance the blade in the photo is 10 inches. The Marples Carpenters American Pattern drawknife was made in four sizes 1930's - 1950's (and possibly earlier): 8 inch, 9 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch

It was made in two sizes in the later years (1960's): 10 inch and 12 inch.

Part of the blade has been finished with a black finish on the top side to match the black handles. The combination of the black and the steel give the drawknife a real sleek look.

These drawknives were part of the William Marples 'Shamrock Brand' range of tools.
