Veritas DX60 Plane Review By: I.Ball
Category: Block Planes
Extra Info: What is a Block Plane? Block Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Veritas
Plane Type: Block
Model No: DX60
The Veritas DX60 block plane is one of Veritas premium lines of block
plane from the Veritas block plane range. It is easy to see why, the
plane design looks like a supercar with its sleek lines and curves and
the business end neatly tucked away giving the plane a real streamline
look.
The plane is made from ductile cast iron with accurately machined and
ground sole and sides to ensure the plane body is flat. The plane sole
and sides are made even flatter than the other non-premium planes, with
a flatness between +0.000" and -0.0015".
The ductile cast iron has been stress relieved. This specially processed
material is advertised as being more durable and stable than grey cast
iron (the material used in most traditional bench planes).
The DX60 is 7 inches in length, 1 3/4 inches in width, fitted with a
1 3/8 inch wide plane blade.
The Veritas dx60 block plane is equipped with a choice of three
plane blade types:
- O1 (hardened to Rockwell 58-60)
- A2 (hardened to Rockwell 60-62)
- PMV-11
The plane blade is placed in position with the bevel facing upwards,
as standard for nearly all block planes.
The DX60 is a low angle block plane with a blade bed angle of 12 degrees.
The standard plane cutter is set with a cutting edge bevel of 25 degrees
resulting in an overall cutting angle of 39 degrees. Very hardworking
timbers may necessitate a steeper bevel (such as 30 degrees) is required
if the 25 degrees struggles.
The blade is secured in place with the use of the die-cast lever cap.
The lever cap is locked in place by turning the knurled wheel located
at the rear of the plane on the underside of the lever cap.
As well as aesthetics and functionality, the DX60 has been designed
for comfort with the curvacious lever cap, curved parts, the front
knob with finger pad depression and the finger grip depressions on the
plane sides.
The Veritas DX60 is a fully adjustable block plane with an adjustable
blade and adjustable plane mouth.
The plane is fitted with a dual function blade adjuster:
(i) The adjuster allows the user to accurately set the depth at which
the blade is set. These depth of cut fine adjustments are carried out
by turning the wheel nut at the very rear of the plane.
(ii) The adjuster can also be used to laterally (sideways) adjust the
blade. The lateral adjustments are easily made by sliding, sideways,
the wheel nut at the very rear of the plane.
There are two set screws, one set either side of the plane walls which
are present to prevent the blade from shifting, as a result maximising
the lateral adjustment.
The Veritas DX60 plane has an adjustable mouth. The mouth size can be
adjusted by moving the mouth plate forwards and backwards to the desired
position; the mouth plate forms part of the sole and is located at the
front of the plane.
The mouth plate is moved by firstly loosening the front knob and then
moving the knob in the required direction; the knob and the mouth plate
are interlinked so sliding the knob slides the mouth plate.
Once the mouth plate is in position it can be locked in place by turning
the front knob until tight. The plane is designed to not allow the mouth
plate to move back as far as the sharp blade so no accidental damage
can occur. Generally a fine mouth is desired as this helps prevent
tear-out of the piece of wood being worked.
The DX60 is supplied in a white Veritas cardboard box with a photo of
the plane printed on the outside. Inside the box is a Veritas DX60
instructions leaflet.
The patented Veritas DX60 block plane is produced by Veritas Tools Inc.
of Canada.
* Important: please refer to the 'disclaimer' at the foot of this review.
* Wearing safety clothing and eye protection is usually a good idea to help protect against injury.
- The blade(s)/cutter(s) is very sharp, take suitable precautions when using/handling/storing
the plane/cutter(s) to prevent injury.
- Failure to loosen parts when making adjustments to the plane can result in damage
to the plane such as cross-threading screw threads. Never force a part to move.
- Overtightening parts can cause damage to the plane and the plane threads.
