Stanley 40 Review By: I.Ball

Manufacturer: Stanley

Plane Type: Scrub

Model No: 40

The Stanley number 40 is a 25cm long plane which is commonly known as the Stanley scrub plane.

The Stanley number 40's main distinctive features are that it is a narrow, simplified bench plane with a very open mouth.

The 40 scrub plane is built lightly to make it much easier to carry out rough planing and for making very heavy cuts without tiring the user.

The plane also boasts an essential large open mouth which allows large amounts of shavings to pass through it as it works a piece of timber.

The plane is controlled using the comfortable, shaped, hardwood rear handle and front knob.

In addition to the hardwood rear handle and front knob, the plane is fitted with a screw cap and a single iron.

The plane blade is ground with a round edge to ensure the plane can cope with heavy work.

It is the combination of the blade and the open mouth which makes the scrub plane suited to carrying out the rougher work and removing lots of stock quickly.

The scrub plane is useful for planing down a board which is too wide to conventionally rip with a hand saw; this process used to be known by the term "hogging".

In recent times Veritas Tools have introduced a scrub plane which is similar to the Stanley 40 scrub plane, see the Veritas Scrub Plane Review.
