Spiers Of Ayr Plane Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Infill Planes
Manufacturer: Spiers Of Ayr
Plane Type: Infill, Smoothing
Model No: 2
This model of Spiers Of Ayr infill smoothing plane is classed as a
parallel sided smoothing plane due to the flat plane sides running parallel
to each other.
The plane is also usually dovetailed (the sole is dovetailed with the sides),
Dovetailed planes took much more skill to make than the cast style of
plane body.
The plane had rosewood infills consisting of a front bun and a rear
section which supported the plade blade and had the rear handle.
The quality lever cap was made from brass.
The lever cap may have had different markings / different styles of markings
depending upon the time at which the plane was made.
The lever cap had the markings 'Spiers Ayr'.
