Edward Preston Chamfer 89 Review By: I.Ball

Category: Old Spokeshaves

Manufacturer: Edward Preston

Tool Type: Chamfer Shave

Model No: 89

The Edward Preston chamfer spokeshave number 89 is a simple 10 1/2 inch long chamfer shave.

The 89 has a round face with two adjustable fences positioned under the shave. The fences are quickly adjusted by releasing and securing the thumb screws on top of the shave arms.

The fences allow any through or stopped chamfer to be produced and repeated evenly and uniformly.

The 38mm (1 1/2 inch) wide blade on the 89 spokeshaves has to be manually placed in position by hand.

Once in place, the cutter is secured by locking the lever cap on to the blade. The lever cap is locked / released by turning the lever cap screw.

The spokeshave body and lever cap are finished with a green japanning finish.

This finish was used on tools made at the very end of the Edward Preston reign (most probably very late 1920's / early 1930's).

The handles on the 89 are advertised a 'straight handle'.

The handles have meshed grip pads towards the end of the handles to offer the user extra grip and control.

Each handle has a convenient circular hole cut in the end to allow the tool to hung from a hook in the workshop.

The Edward Preston 89 chamfer shave was the predecessor of the red Record A65 chamfer shave.
