Manufacturer: Stanley
Plane Type: Block
Model No: 140
The Stanley block plane number 140 is a specially designed skew
block plane (with an angled mouth), a wooden front knob (usually rosewood),
an adjustable blade, and a removable side wall.
The Stanley 140 is very good at working difficult wood including end
grain work to produce a super smooth finish.
The Stanley 140 is able to work difficult wood due to the skewed mouth
and a blade set at a low angle, a combination which is well suited to producing
the best results on tricky wood.
The number 140 has a blade depth adjuster located at the rear of the
plane below the blade.
The depth adjuster is operated by a wheel; turn the wheel for a finer
or deeper cut.
The wheel has five small rimmed circular holes pierced
through the face, a central raised full circle outlined by a rimmed circle.
The edge of the wheel is knurled.
The right hand side of the plane (as looking from the rear) is detachable.
The removal of the wall allows the plane to be used as a rebate plane.
The side is held in place by two screws; one located between the front
knob and wall, and the other located towards the rear between the depth
wheel adjuster and the wall.
The lever cap secures the blade by turning the adjuster wheel underneath
the lever cap.
The lever cap wheel has four evenly spread circular
holes through the face and has knurled edges. The lever cap has a plated
finish.
The lever cap has a curvacious head, an angled bottom edge and an extra
raised wall protruding from the right hand side (as looking from the rear).
A modern day version of this plane has been produced in the form of the
Lie Nielsen 140 block plane.
