Extra Info: What is a Shoulder Plane? Shoulder Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Shoulder Rebate
Model No: 042
The Record 042 plane is a shoulder rebate /rabbet plane from the Record
rebate / rabbet plane range.
The Record 042 shoulder plane is the larger of the fixed sole Record
shoulder rebate planes at 8 inch long and 3/4 inch (19mm) wide.
The plane has a cast iron body, lever arm, depth adjuster and plane
blade.
The Record rebate plane 042 was made for fine and accurate work.
The solid one-piece body was made with perfectly flat and squared sides
and sole and with a fine mouth. The plane can be used laying on either
side or standing upright. The top of the plane has curved areas on top
of the plane offering added comfort and control.
The 042 is fitted with a 3/4 inch (19mm) tungsten steel bevel edge cutter. The
bevel edge is positioned in the plane with the bevel facing upwards (as with
most/all shoulder planes). The plane blades cutting edge spans the full width
of the plane. The tungsten steel cutter was advertised during its time as 'No
iron will take a sharper edge, and retain it longer than will the Tungsten Steel
of the Record cutters'.
The Record 042 shoulder plane is equipped with a blade adjusting mechanism.
The blade adjuster control is located at the rear of the plane in the form of
a knurled nut. The adjuster is used to control the depth at which the blade
will cut.
The blade is held firmly in place with the use of the securing cap / lever cap /
lever arm. The cap locks the blade in place by locating the securing cap into
the two notches in the plane body and then turning until tight the knurled securing
wheel located on the underside of the securing cap.
The Record plane 042 was originally presented in a varnished Record wooden box.
The box had a sliding lid with the writing 'Record Tools, Made In England' on
the lid, it also had a yellow label at the end of the box detailing the plane
information. The packaging changed in the 1940's to a blue cardboard box with
an orange/yellow label at the end of the box detailing the plane information.
The Record 042 is finished in a thin layer or nickel plating. This plating is
prone to coming off through years of use, as such these planes are often found
today with partial plating cover or even no plating cover.
This model of plane has more recently been revived in the form of the
Clifton 420 shoulder rebate plane.
